The animal is the customer
The person pays, but the dog decides. We test on the animal before we test the price point, and we have killed products that sold well in a sample room and bored a real dog in four minutes.
Pet Obsession designs, manufactures and imports pet apparel, cat furniture, plush toys and cleanup supplies. We have sold to independent pet retailers out of New York since 2002.

The company
Pet Obsession started in 2002 as a website about pets in New England — shelter listings, adoption advice and a monthly photo contest. The catalog came later, and the habit of thinking about the animal first came with it.
Today we are a manufacturer and importer. We draw the product, choose the materials, place it with a factory we have visited, inspect it before it ships, and warehouse it here so a store owner can order two cases and get them on Thursday.
We are deliberately small. One buyer can reach the person who designed the thing they are asking about. That is not a policy; there are only so many of us.
How we make it
Every product starts as a sketch in the New York office, usually after a retailer tells us what keeps getting returned. We build a sample, hand it to a real dog, and watch what fails first.
We work with a short list of partner factories and we visit them. We know the line supervisors by name. A product moves only when we have walked the floor it will be made on.
Plush seams get pulled. Scratching posts get weighted and tipped. Waste bags get filled and carried. A container does not leave on a promise.
We carry inventory so independents do not have to buy a container to get a fair price. Order two cases or twenty; it ships from our warehouse, not from a port six weeks out.
What we hold to
A pet cannot read a label, complain, or return anything. Everything below follows from that.
The person pays, but the dog decides. We test on the animal before we test the price point, and we have killed products that sold well in a sample room and bored a real dog in four minutes.
No loose eyes, no toxic dye, no fill a dog can swallow in one pull. We pay for the testing whether or not a buyer asks to see it, and we keep the reports on file for seven years.
We build for the shop with one location and an owner who knows their customers' dogs by name. Our case packs, our margins and our minimums are set for them, not for a big box.
If a toy is not indestructible we do not print indestructible on it. Buyers remember an honest spec far longer than a generous one, and so do their customers.
Leadership
Joined in 2006 as a sales rep covering the Northeast. Runs the company and still walks every trade show floor.
Fifteen years in soft goods before pets. Owns the sketch, the sample and the decision to kill it.
Manages the factory list and the inspection schedule. On a plane roughly one week a month.
Started behind the counter of an independent pet store in Queens. Knows what actually moves off a peg.
Runs the warehouse and the order desk. The reason a Tuesday order is on a truck Tuesday night.
Retail partners
We sell through independent pet retailers and regional chains across North America. A sample of the accounts carrying the line.
What buyers say
They sent a replacement case before I finished describing the problem. That is the whole relationship in one sentence.Rachel IyerOwner, Barkley & Main · Providence, RI
The hoodies sell out every October and they have never once told me the container is late. I have four vendors. Only one of them can say that.Tom BergstromBuyer, Riverbend Pet Market · Portland, OR
Small case packs are the reason I can carry them at all. I do not have a back room the size of a warehouse.Yvette CharbonneauOwner, Northgate Animal Supply · Ottawa, ON
